Global Opportunity Panel Successfully Held in Beijing

Date:2015-6-29 16:06:13

Global Opportunity Network hosted a Global Opportunity Panel in Beijing, June 15, 2015. The Beijing Panel was the last in the series of Global Opportunity Panel. In the past two weeks seven panels have been held in San Francisco, Sao Paulo, Johannesburg, Oslo, Abu Dhabi, London and Delhi to discuss the potential opportunities in the Five Big Risks which include Resistance to Lifesaving Medicine, Global Food Crisis, Increasing Emissions from Transport, Loss of Ocean Biodiversity and a Generation Wasted in Unemployment. The results of the discussion will serve as a key source of insights and content for the Global Opportunity Report 2016. Global Opportunity Network and Report are organized jointly by UN Global Compact, DNV GL and Monday Morning Global Institute.

Center for International Business Ethics (CIBE) at the University of International Business and Economics was the local partner of the Beijing Panel. Dr. Liu Baocheng, Director of CIBE gave a speech at the beginning of the event. He said, understanding the problem is the premise of solving the problem. Global Opportunity Panel offered us an optimistic and global platform to help us comprehend more thoroughly the problems we attempt to solve, and to trigger potential solutions in communication. Dr. Liu hoped that this event would catch the inspiration of participants and propose new perspectives for sustainability problems.

For the Five Big Risks discussed in the Panel, the panelists proposed the following opportunities:

1. Resistance to Lifesaving Medicine: In China the misuse of antibiotics and medicine is a serious problem. The society should educate the general public to promote healthy lifestyle and to prevent illness, and educate medical professionals to improve the current situation of medicine usage. In some extent this approach will alleviate the severity of the problem.

2.  Global Food Crisis: We should advocate for minimized wasting of food and healthy diet in society and therefore guide the general public towards sustainable food purchasing habit. Meanwhile we should do more work in scientific research to increase the output of relevant agricultural products. It is also necessary to deepen the market reform, to make sure that the market distributes food to where the food is most needed.

3. Increasing Emissions from Transport: Subsidize public transportation and encourage people to give up private transportation. Develop and advocate green sustainable energy to improve the ingredients of transport emissions. Make more reasonable civil designing and decrease the scale of cities. Disperse concentrated resources in different areas of the cities to reduce unnecessary transportation.

4.Loss of Ocean Biodiversity: Develop fish farming industry to alleviate overfishing from the ocean. Develop tourism to encourage local people to preserve ocean bio- resources.

5.A Generation Wasted in Unemployment: Reform the education system. Invite the companies to participate in the current system to make our education more relevant to actual jobs in society. Such systems have been attempted in Europe, but in China there is no precedent.

Finally, the event ended in the fervent discussion of the panelists.
