Responsible Overseas Investment Salon was Successfully Held in Beijing

Date:2015-6-29

On June 23th, 2015, Conference and Report on Transparency and Risk Management for Chinese Extractive Industry’s Overseas Investment was held in Beijing, sponsored by corporate social responsibility (CSR) consultancy SynTao and School of Economics and Management (SEM) of Tsinghua University. The report put forward that transparent operation and active communication are conducive to risk prevention and reduction for Chinese extractive industry’s overseas investment. Dr. Liu Baocheng, Director of Center for International Business Ethics (CIBE) at the University of International Business and Economics (UIBE) attended the conference and participated in the discussion.

Dr. Liu holds that national strategic planning plays an important role in China’s economic transition, industrial restructuring, and inclusive and sustainable development at global level. Overseas Chinese enterprises must learn to be a good neighbor of local people, improve their communication skills and seek win-win outcomes through end product development and diversified operation. Chinese government, enterprises, non-profit organizations and media should take a global perspective and strengthen communication and cooperation to promote CSR practices and China’s international image based on mutual respect.

After the conference, Seminar on Transparency and Risk Management of Chinese Extractive Industry’s Overseas Investment was held by SynTao, SEM, China Society for World Trade Organization Studies (CWTO) of the Ministry of Commerce of the People's Republic of China (MOFCOM), Networking and Collaboration Center for China’s Multinational Business of University of International Business and Economics (UIBE),Center for International Business Ethics of UIBE, Institute of International Economy of UIBE, China Strategy Research Center for Open Economy and International Technology Cooperation of UIBE, and China WTO Tribune. It was the second session of Responsible Overseas Investment Salon, attracting people from the government, universities, enterprises, non-profit organizations and media to discuss about CSR issues in Chinese overseas investment, in particular the extractive industry.

SunZhenyu, Chairman of China Society for CWTO of MOFCOM, pointed out that there are both challenges and opportunities for Chinese business operating overseas and CSR practices with regard to not only our companies but also our nation. Chinese enterprises should obey the laws and regulations of the host countries and attach importance to the interests of local people. In this regard, Chinese extractive industry is confronted with great challenges. In general, Chinese companies have raised awareness about CSR, started to take initiatives and gained rich experience or lessons in the process of “going global”. There are a lot we can learn from the western companies, and Chinese government, enterprises, universities and social organizations are all engaged in CSR research and practices. Mr. Sun holds that Chinese enterprises must incorporate CSR into corporate culture, and the global perspective, rule consciousness and CSR awareness would be enhanced through CSR training. Besides, the government, enterprises, associations and think tank should cooperate with regard to information disclosure, CSR communication, business transparency, platform establishment, etc.

Other guests included Ms. Jia Ning from China-ASEAN Environmental Cooperation Center, Professor Qian Xiaojun from School of Economics and Management of Tsinghua University, Ms. Li Wen from China National Petroleum Corporation Kunlun Energy Company, Mr. Shan Mitra from Department for International Development of the United Kingdom, Dr.Liu Baocheng from Center for International Business Ethics of UIBE, etc. They shared their views on green supply chain management, CSR communication, CSR localization and project selection, international cooperation, CSR research and training, etc.

The seminar ended with fruitful results.
